TALVITIE: KARABAKH SETTLEMENT SHOULD EVOLVE

12.05.2005 04:56

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov met with EU
special representative for the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie and the
delegation headed by him in Baku, reported Regnum news agency. Views over
the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the coming parliamentary election and other
questions were exchanged during the meeting. Dwelling on the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict, Minister Mamedyarov noted that the Azeri party is
interested in peaceful settlement of the problem. Underscoring the need of
observing international law norms, the Minister stated that `occupation’ of
20% of the territory of Azerbaijan, which `resulted in 1 million of Azeris
becoming refugees and forced migrants, is a serious obstacle on the way of
the social and economic development of Azerbaijan and the building of a
democratic society.’ Mamedyarov also emphasized that the first necessary
condition for settlement of the conflict is unconditional liberation of `the
occupied territories’ around Nagorno Karabakh, `return of the population,
ousted from there, to their native hearth, noting time has come for resolute
steps in order to respond to the demands referring to restoration of the
violated rights.’ Emphasizing that he comes for peaceful settlement of the
conflict, H. Talvitie stated the talks aimed at the solution of the problem
are supported by the European community. He noted that the process of
settlement of the conflict should evolve.
