IN CASE OF DOUBLE CITIZENSHIP SOME RIGHTS SHOULD BE RESTRICTED, ULP THINKS
The Club of Political Dispute organized a discussion last week about double
citizenship in Armenia. One of the reporters of the day Hrayr Karapetian
from ARF Dashktsutyun failed to come but the other one, Grigor Khonjeyan
from United Labor Party, came at the proper time.
Mr. Khonjeyan emphasized first the importance of the issue for the
constitution as the present-day constitution simply bans double citizenship.
Then he presented his party’s views on the issue. The ULP thinks that the
prohibition of double citizenship should be removed, and the citizens of
Armenia must be able to get the second citizenship and the foreigners must
be able to get Armenian citizenship. “Double citizenship should be tolerated
but it’s needless to encourage it”, Grigor Khonjeyan said.
Mr. Khonjeyan thinks that issues concerning conscription and tax payment
will be regulated by laws. But the ULP offers a reservation: only citizens
of the Republic of Armenia will have the right to take part in republican
elections and the right of land owning. Mr. Khonjeyan gave no answer to our
question about the citizenship of Nagorno Karabakh residents.
