SEVAN FISH SPAWNING – FISHING BANNED
YEREVAN, JUNE 30. ARMINFO. Armenia’s Ecology Ministry has decreed to
ban commercial fishing in Lake Sevan July 1-Aug 31 2005.
For the first time ever the ban will last for 6 months – for there
is almost no fish of reproductive age left in the lake.
In Sept the fishing will be allowed in small quantities only while
in Oct-Dec the fishing will be banned again.
This year the government has almost halved the fishing quota – 300
tons against 500 tons last year.
Trade and industrial enterprises reports that fish worth 335.5 mln
AMD was caught in Jan-May 2005 with the sales totalling 506.1 mln AMD.
