YEREVAN, APRIL 6, NOYAN TAPAN. The April 6 discussion with
participation of a number of politicians, organized by the National
Press Club, was dedicated to discussion of the current level
and prospects of deepening of Armenian-American relations. The
discussion participants: Chairman of the Constitutional Low Union
Hrant Khachatrian, Chairman of the National-Democratic Party, RA
MP Shavarsh Kocharian, Chairman of the Christian-Democratic Party
of Armenia Khosrov Haroutiunian, Head of the ARF Dashnaktsutiun Hay
Dat Committee Kiro Manoyan, positively estimated the current level
of Armenian-American relations, as well as pointed to the balanced
policy of the U.S. in the region.

According to Hrant Khachatrian, on the whole the programs of the
U.S. in Armenia, in difference to the Russian programs, are aimed at
development of democracy. He mentioned that the U.S. has been always
acting in Armenia by much more flexible methods than Russia, not
causing discontent or hostility among the population. H.Khachatrian
wished the U.S. recognized the Nagorno Karabakh independence as quick
as possible. In Kiro Manoyan’s estimation, the U.S. pursues two goals
in the region: to reduce the influence of Russia and to hamper to the
spreading of the Iranian influence. He mentioned that we should not
ignore the fact that the U.S. government provides annual assistance
to Nagorno Karabakh. He refuted the supposition about the pressure
exerted by the U.S. on Armenia in the issue of Karabakh settlement. In
his opinion, this pressure is excluded in the coming years as the
U.S. will be engaged in its own domestic problems and, first of all,
in the Congress elections to be held at the end of the year. Khosrov
Haroutiunian positively estimated the presence of the U.S. in the
region, but, nevertheless, warned that we should not stake only
on one country. “The Armenians should learn lessons from history,
I mean Russia, on the which the only stake was made”.
