An Azerbaijani rights activist has applied for asylum in Georgia,
Turan reported on 7 April.

The head of the Caucasus rights centre to protect freedom of
conscience and religion, Azar Samadov, asked Georgian President
Mikheil Saakashvili to grant him asylum or allow him to apply for
asylum in foreign embassies in the country, the agency said.

Samadov was detained in Tbilisi on 31 March following a request from
the Azerbaijani security agencies. He is accused of organizing mass
riots in Baku on 15-16 October 2003.

If extradited to Azerbaijan, Samadov might be sentenced to five to
seven years in prison, the agency said.
