Armenia’s hope in world tennis, Zaruhi Harutyunyan of Armenia bagged
her fourth title of 2006 in Scotland, demolishing in the final
Anastasia Nebojanko 6-1, 6-2 who in the semi finals had eliminated
tournament number one Alexa Guarachi of the United States.

However, Harutyunyan’s true determination and champion characteristics
in the Scottish Championships emerged in the semi finals – when she
fought off all odds – against Caitlin Smith, 7-6(4), 6-7(6),7-5.

A position in the top 200 is now well in her grasp and if she continues
this winning tempo her chase for a Grand Slam participation may come
much sooner than we all anticipate.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
