Armenia have appointed Scottish coach Ian Porterfield as the man to
lead them in UEFA EURO 2008~Y qualifying.

‘Very happy’
The 60-year-old replaces Henk Wisman who was relieved of his duties
earlier in the year. The former Chelsea FC manager has signed a
contract until the end of 2007 and will be responsible for Armenian
national teams at all levels. "I am very happy to be chosen by the
Football Federation of Armenia," Porterfield said. "I am looking
forward to starting my work. I will use all my knowledge to get
positive results." His first test comes on 6 September when Armenia
begin their UEFA EURO 2008~Y campaign against Belgium.

Much travelled
As a player, Porterfield hit the headlines with English club Sunderland
AFC by scoring the winning goal in the 1973 FA Cup final.

He began his coaching career with Sheffield United FC, but his most
high-profile appointments came at Aberdeen FC and Chelsea. He has
also led a number of national sides, including Zambia, Saudi Arabia,
Zimbabwe, Oman, and Trinidad and Tobago. His most recent spell as a
coach came with Korean club Busan I’Park.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
