WASHINGTON, JANUARY 16, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. Mark Parris, the
former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey stated that the draft on qualifying
the murders of Armenians in Ottaman Turkey as a genocide will be
adopted by the U.S. Congress.
"The possibility of putting the draft on the Congress agenda is
100 per cent. The draft will probably be passed both at House of
Representatives and at Senate. Turkey traditionally relied on the
political figures of Washington, but that assistance weakened for a
number of reasons, particularly, for the Armenian Genocide issue is a
delicate issue for the democrates," the former Ambassador emphasized
in the interview given to the Turkish "Milliyet" daily.
Parris stressed that the draft on the genocide will be adopted:
"Everybody beleives that adoption of the draft will make the
relations (with Turkey: "NT") more difficult, but it does not mean
that the U.S. policy will change. The American policy is not ready
yet to use similar inflexible edges," the former American Ambassador
stated, adding that adoption of the draft will not arise problems
as "U.S. President Bush greatly assists Turkey." Responding the
question if Washington will assist Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan in the coming president’s elections in the case of the
latter’s nomination, the former Ambassador expressed a confidence that
Bush’s administration will not give a signal of agreement to Cankaya
(President’s Palace of Turkey: "NT").
