YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 19, NOYAN TAPAN. The regular 6th congress of the
People’s Party of Armenia (PPA) was held in the conference-hall of
the RA Government on February 17. About 590 deputies from different
marzes of the republic participated in the congress. Representatives
from other political forces were not invited to the congress. Party
head Stepan Demirchian spoke about the party programs, especially about
the problems connected with participation in the coming parliamentary
elections. It was mentioned at the congress that 29938 people are
members of the PPA at the moment, the party has 53 territorial and
947 primary organizations. The congress affirmed the additions and
amendments being proposed to the PPA program and regulations. As
S.Demirchian mentioned in the interview to journalists, program
changes are not fundamental and are aimed to specification of the
party position in some issues. Particularly, real but not formal
implementation of the obligations undertaken before the Council of
Europe, Eurointegration are attached importance in the program.

Importance of the strategic partnership with Russia is
re-affirmed. Besides, issues relating to the ecological and demographic
state were more emphasized in the party program. "The Armenian people
does not secure its physical reproduction today. We think that urgent
steps are necessary to improve this situation as if it continues in
this way, the country will be under the threat of becoming a desert,"
the PPA Chairman mentioned. In his opinion, on the one hand, growth
of birthrate must be stimulated in the country, on the other hand,
immigration must be encouraged.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
