37 THOUSAND DIABETES PATIENTS, INCLUDING ABOUT 300 CHILDREN AND 7,000 INSULIN DEPENDENT PATIENTS, REGISTERED IN ARMENIA

YEREVAN, MARCH 20, NOYAN TAPAN. Cases of diabetes are increasing
in Armenia with every pasing year. Thus, in March of this year, the
number of diabetes cases grew by 2,000 on the March 2006. The Chief
Endocrinologist of the RA Ashot Mamikonian told NT correspondent
that 37,000 diabetes patients are currently registered in Armenia,
including about 300 children up to 18 years and 7,000 insulin dependent
patients. By comparison, in the 1960s, only 43 diabetes patients were
registered in the country.

According to A. Mamikonian, the number of diabetes patients makes about
270 million in the world. In terms of its prevalence, diabetes is in
third place after cardiovascular and oncological diseases. According
to the chief endocrinologist, if the current rates of diabetes growth
continue, in 2050, about 40-50% of the world population will suffer
from this diasease.
