AKHALKALAKI, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS; Several non-governmental
organizations in the predominantly Armenian-populated
Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia, which borders Armenia,
were to organize a rally today to demand that central authorities in
Tbilisi grant the Armenian language the status of a regional language.

Javakhk-Info news agency said the rally would be held in Akhalkalaki,
the region’s capital. The agency said local authorities were likely
to join it as well.

A coordinating committee said yesterday the rally is an initiative
of the entire Armenian population of the region.

The rally would ask the government in Tbilisi to ratify the European
Charter on Regional Languages and respect Georgia’s international
commitments, which it assumed to protect the interests of its national
minorities.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
