Yerevan, 20 April: The outcome of the forthcoming 2008 presidential
election in Armenia largely depends on the statement of Armenian
President Robert Kocharyan about whom he prefers to see in the post
after himself, the Armenian president’s aide on national security
Garnik Isagulyan said at a news conference in the National Press
Club today.
Isagulyan stressed that the results of sociological surveys carried out
by his centre for strategic research show that although Armenians know
that Kocharyan does not have the right to nominate his candidacy for a
third presidential term, his personal rating is still higher than that
of all other politicians put together. This is also explained by the
personal qualities of the incumbent head of state, his biography and
the fact that people cannot but value the continuous economic growth,
stability and peace. Because of this the word of the president is
very substantial in society, Isagulyan stressed and noted that even
after Kocharyan leaves the post of president, he will most likely
remain in major politics.
Isagulyan also stressed that his personal view is that the most worthy
candidate to the post of Armenian president after Robert Kocharyan
is Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan.
