YEREVAN, MAY 2, NOYAN TAPAN. "The current election campaign differs
from previous ones in its proceeding more calmly and in a civilized
way," Tigran Torosian, RA NA Speaker, Board member of Republican Party
of Armenia, stated at the May 2 press conference. He did not agree
to the thought that no ideological struggle is carried on within the
framework of the current campaign: in his words, there is an exact
difference among programs of a number of parties.

He did not agree to the opinion that the public shows indifference
towards the upcoming elections: "First, abstract estimations
are inappropriate and second, we should wait for the end of the
elections." T. Torosian reminded that according to a number of
sociological surveys, 55-60% voters will take part in the elections.

As regards the circumstance that RPA’s election campaign is carried on
mainly by Chairman of Party’s Board, Prime Minister Serge Sargsian,
T. Torosian said that the Prime Minister assumed the burden of
visits, but the election campaign also includes various meetings,
press conferences, and other RPA members also show great activity
from that point of view.

As regards the assertions that the current election campaign is
accompanied by bloody incidents, T. Torosian said that no one has
proved yet that any of those incidents is somehow connected with the
elections. "Unfortunately, in the preelection period the criminal
world has not announced a moratorium for its actions, which happened
during the Nagorno Karabakh movement." He expressed the hope that all
incidents registered during the election campaign will be examined
and those guilty will be punished.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
