Armenian premier upbeat about his party’s chances

Armenia TV, Yerevan

Text of report by Armenian private Armenia TV on 12 May

[Presenter] Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan cast his vote today
[12 May].

[Journalist, in Russian] Mr Sargsyan, how do you see the chances of
your party?

[Sargsyan, in Russian] Very good, as always.

[Journalist] Mr prime minister, how do you assess the voting process as
of now, and how do you see the chances of your party?

[Sargsyan, switches to Armenian] As I said, I see the chances of our
party [Republican Party of Armenia] as high. As for the process, it is
calm, and we have no serious cases to be worried about.

[Journalist, words indistinct]

[Sargsyan] I would like very much the election to be the best one in
the history of Armenia for both our people and the big number of
observers. I mean that both people and the observers assess it
[election] as such.

[Journalist] In your opinion, how high will the turnout be?

[Sargsyan] You see that all the members of the commission say that the
turnout is high. I think people are going to actively vote because we
all conducted good campaigns.

[Journalist] Mr Sargsyan, some political forces announce that the
authorities have abused administrative resources.

[Sargsyan] Anyone has the right to announce whatever they wish, we are
a democratic country. I am confident that the preparatory period of the
election was held in line with democratic principles. That is part of
democracy too. Let them speak, if that is what they think. I am going
to work now. It is spring; there are many problems in the republic.
Thank you.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
