Pasadena Armenian National Committee Meets with Assemblyman Anthony
Portantino
Pasadena, CA – The Pasadena Armenian National Committee (Pasadena ANC),
joined by members of the Armenian Cultural Foundation and the Armenian Youth
Federation (AYF), recently met with Assemblymember Anthony Portantino
(D-44). At the meeting, Pasadena ANC addressed a number of issues that are
of concern to the Armenian community in the city of Pasadena, including
genocide education efforts in the local school system.
"Assemblyman Portantino is well aware of Armenian Genocide recognition and
the importance of teaching genocide awareness in schools," said ANC-Pasadena
member, Suzanne Berberian. "We look forward to working with the Assemblyman
on these issues and others such as affordable housing and improving our
local public school system."
During the meeting, Assemblyman Portantino shared that the California State
Assembly provides a number of opportunities that are available to college
students and recent graduates, such as the California Fellows Program. The
California Fellows program allows qualified college graduates to work in the
California State Assembly, Senate and Executive branches. While working as
a California Fellow, students will receive credit toward their Masters
studies through the California State University, Sacramento.
Recently, Assemblymember Portanino’s office, in collaboration with the
Armenian Consulate in Los Angeles, began coordinating a study abroad and
exchange program where students from the United States can study in Armenia
and students from Armenia will have the opportunity to travel to the United
States to further their education.
"Assemblyman Portantino opened my eyes to many opportunities that are
available to college students through the California State Legislature. I
will be sharing details of these programs with my fellow AYF members," said
AYF Pasadena chairperson, Ishkhan Boghossian.
The ANCA is the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots
political organization. Working in coordination with a network of offices,
chapters, and supporters throughout the United States and affiliated
organizations around the world, the ANCA actively
advances the concerns of the Armenian-American community on a broad range of
