Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend I.Alizade / Vasiliy Istratov, the Russian
Ambassador to Azerbaijan, has predicted that the peace talks on the
resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh
will intensify.

Istratov said in talks with journalists that negotiations will
most likely intensify following the completion of the elections in
Armenia. He stated that making any form of prediction is very difficult
in politics, as the results will not only depend on Russia’s will,
but on a number of reasons.

Up to the 12 May parliamentary elections in Armenia, the polls
were expected to impede the peace talks on the resolution of the
Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. ‘The elections have been held and the
results have been announced. Now we will see whether the elections
have impeded the talks," the diplomat stressed.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries broke out in
1988 due to Armenia’s territorial claims at Azerbaijan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
