SPEAKER GHULIAN MET GERMAN DELEGATION

On May 16 the speaker of the National Assembly Ashot Ghulian met the
delegation of German politicians, businessmen, representatives of NGOs
and reporters visiting Stepanakert. The visit, which had a cognitive
purpose, was initiated by the Union of Friends of Artsakh NGO based
in Berlin. The head of the delegation Eckhart Strattenschulte, who
is the director of the European Academy of Berlin, said their visit
to Nagorno-Karabakh is an answering visit to the visit of the speaker
of the Karabakh parliament Ashot Ghulian to Berlin on October 2005. At
the same time, he said these visits will continue, and in this context,
they hope for the visit of the NKR parliament to Germany. The German
delegation were interested in the political, public, social, economic,
legislative, cultural spheres of life in Karabakh, the settlement of
the Karabakh-Azerbaijani conflict and the possible developments, and
in this connection the stance and expectations of official Stepanakert
and the society. The speaker of the National Assembly said hopefully
the guest will manage to gather comprehensive information on the
country’s past and present and will fill in the information gap on
NKR in Germany, as well as in other European countries.
With regard to the settlement of the conflict, Speaker Ashot Ghulian
said the format of the talks over Karabakh is not rational because
Nagorno-Karabakh is not taking part in the talks. On the same day,
the German delegation also met with the parliament factions and groups.
