New York, NY (AHN) – Far from the killing in Iraq and Turkey, the
Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Koichiro Matsuura issued another
condemnation for the killing of a journalist.
Director-General Matsuura says "I condemn the killing of Hrant Dink,"
who was murdered in Istanbul months ago, most likely for his work as
the editor of an Armenian newspaper.
As part of a speech that has now become commonplace, Matsuura says,
"Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and press freedom,
its corollary, is a cornerstone of democracy and rule of law."
Despite being killed in January and no suspects currently in custody
for the murder, the Director-General still "welcomes the speed with
which the Turkish authorities investigated this case, proof of their
determination not to let this heinous crime go unpunished."
Yesterday, Matsuura issued another press release saying he was
horrified at the killing of two ABC journalists in Iraq. However,
UNESCO has done little to add to the safety of journalists, and the
organization does not play any major role in helping to secure the
release of journalists who have been kidnapped.
UNESCO does, however, issue press releases.
