DIASPORA ARMENIANS MAY BE ABLE TO VOTE IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, NA
VICE SPEAKER SAYS
`We were in the front line for excluding the ban on dual citizenship
from the Constitution,’ Paruir Hairikyan, chairman of National
Self-Determination Union, told reporters at Tesaket Club. Hairikyan
believes it is pointless to deprive a person from the right of vote
based on the place of residence. `It is a constitutional violation
and, in time, it will be corrected,’ he said.
Vahan Hovanisyan, NA vice speakers, said still on September 22, 1991,
after the declaration of independence, the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation (Dashnaksutiun) suggested to declare the republic as the
legal follower of the republic of 1918-1920. This could mean that all
Armenians could become legal owners of their fathers. Hovanisyan said
the authorities of the time were afraid that by doing so the political
picture of the republic would change. `May be they were afraid that
those people would take part in the privatization and our economy
would be much better now,’ Hovanisyan said.
Asked if it is possible for Diaspora Armenians to get dual citizenship
by 2008 and participate in the presidential elections, Hovanisyan said
it is quite possible.
