CONSTRUCTION OF NOAH’S ARK COMPLETED
Today’s Zaman, Turkey
June 1 2007
The ship modeled on Noah’s Ark and constructed by Greenpeace to draw
attention to the growing problem of global warming was publicized in
a ceremony.
The ceremony held on the occasion of the launch of the ship whose
construction was begun at Mount Aðrý four weeks ago was attended
by Igdýr Governor Saim Saffet Karahisarlý, TV star Okan Bayulgen,
more than forty Greenpeace members and other guests.
The ceremony was started with the recital of the Mount Ararat (Aðrý)
Declaration by Okan Bayulgen in Turkish, English, German, Russian,
Dutch and Arabic. Afterwards, in reference to all countries in
the world, 194 doves were freed. Speaking at the ceremony, Governor
Karahisarlý who first thanked Greenpeace for their efforts to protect
the environment further added that the Metsamor Nuclear Plant based
in Armenia was a major concern for the city. Governor Karahisarlý
and Greenpeace members later hung the pictures sent from all over
the world to draw attention to global warming inside the ship. The
Declaration stresses that global warming will cause drought, food
scarcity, massive migrations, floods and ecological imbalances on
a scale that has not been seen since the narration of the story
of Noah’s Ark. Noting that climate change will change natural life
irreversibly and ruin lives of billions, the declaration holds world
leaders responsible for preventing further deterioration.
The declaration underlines that world leaders are obligated to ensure
protection of the right to life, shelter, health and vital natural
resources and make sustainable and renewable energy accessible for
all. The declaration further called for campaigns to educate people
on climate change and compliance with the UN Convention on Climate
Change and Kyoto Protocol by all states.
