The fourth National Assembly held its first session today. RA President
made a greeting speech. Congratulating the newly elected deputies,
the President noted that the parliamentary elections were a great
step towards democracy.
"Obviously, this is a great contribution to ensuring the stability in
the region, since the issue of the Parliament’s legitimacy is out of
question, and this, I think, is one of the most important guarantees
for stable and fruitful activity," Robert Kocharyan noted. He highly
assessed the fact that a convincing parliamentary majority has been
formed, "an interesting format has been found, and I’m confident that
this format will enable to effectively work for many years." According
to the President’s assessment, mechanisms of political cooperation
are developing in the country and this phenomenon shapes democratic
traditions.
In Mr. Kocharyan’s words, now it is necessary to rapidly form the
leadership of the Parliament, the Government and ratify its new
agenda as soon as possible. He reminded that after the Constitutional
amendments, the representatives elected by people carry the main
responsibility for these processes. In the past the Constitution
assigned greater role to the President in this process. He also
reminded the activity of the authorities, particularly that of the
executive body cannot be interrupted. "There re many things to do in
the country irrespective of you and the Government’s decisions. The
expectations from the new Parliament are extremely great," said the
President, adding that everyone will be trying to compare the results
of the past four years and the coming five years.
The Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II rendered a blessing speech.
After the greeting speeches the newly elected deputies took an
oath. The eldest MP, Rafik Petrosyan, presented the Deputies, reading
out their names and surnames, the precinct number or the name of
the party.
With a secret ballot Tigran Torosyan was reelected the Speaker of
Parliament.
