BAKU AGREED ON MOSCOW-WASHINGTON JOINT USE OF GABALA RADAR BASE

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov made
remarks on Russian President Putin’s statement on possible joint
use of the Gabala radar base. "Russia has exercised an initiative
to share information with the United States. Azerbaijan is ready to
hold consultations with the United States and Russia in bilateral or
trilateral format," he said.
Mammadyarov said Gabala is Azerbaijan’s property and "it would be
wrong to take action without Azerbaijan’s agreement." "Both the
U.S. and Russia accept this position. We are ready for talks," he said.
Mr Mammadyarov said his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov referred
to the issue when in Baku. Talks with the United States were
"rudimentary", he said.
When asked whether the joint use of the radar base may lead to
deterioration of relations with Iran, Mr Mammadyarov said it would
be incorrect to think that the issue may worsen relationship with any
other state. "Azerbaijan’s policy rests on national interests. Talks
will base on them as well," he said.
When commenting on the possible consequences in the region the Azeri
Minister said "it can promote stability and predictability of moves
in the region."
Mr Mammadyarov also noted that the possibility of reconsideration of
the Russia-Azeri agreement on the Gabala base lease is being negotiated
at the moment, Day.az reports.
