NO PROGRESS IN THE PRESIDENTS’ MEETING IN ST PETERSBURG, AZERBAIJANI FM SAYS

Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
June 12 2007

No progress has been made regarding the settlement of the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict during the meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian
Presidents in St. Petersburg on June 10, Foreign Minister Elmar
Mammadyarov told journalists, APA reports. The Minister publicized
the details of the presidents’ meeting.

"Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents negotiated in the context of
previously-debated elements. Unfortunately, I can not say the parties
have achieved any success. But every meeting allows specifying the
position of the opposite party. The meeting lasted for over three hours
and debates were intensive. The Presidents touched upon a number of
issues, mainly basic principles of the settlement of the conflict,"
the Foreign Minister reported.

The Minister said the negotiations were held in the framework of the
Prague process.

"In other worlds, the negotiations covered the plan of solution of the
conflict through stages. The plan of solution envisages withdrawal
of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories, deploying
peacekeeping forces in these territories, IDPs’ returning to their
native lands and the status of Nagorno Karabakh," he said.

Elmar Mammadyarov said the negotiations will continue.

"OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs asked time to analyze the situation.

Further aspects of the negotiations are known, but additional details
may emerge," the Minister underlined.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
