"We welcome the parliamentary election outcome in Armenian and
congratulate the Armenian people on bettering the conduct of elections
in the country," John Danilovich, the Executive Director of the
Millennium Challenge Cooperation, said during the inauguration of the
Millennium Challenge Account Armenia state non-commercial organization.
John Danilovich has written a few letters to the Armenian President
on the necessity for fair governance as an important benchmark of
the Millennium Challenge programme.
Danilovich declined to answer journalists’ questions today. Instead,
Vardan Khachatryan, the RoA Minister of Finance and Economy, spoke
of the programme implementation in Armenia.
"The Millennium Challenge Armenia programme is implemented on a
satisfactory level. The preparations will be completed by the end of
the year", Vardan Khachatryan, told news reporters on June 11.
The MCC has already allotted 5.5 million dollars to Armenia, and will
earmark another 6-7 million by the end of this year.
"A programme will be launched aimed at reduction of poverty
and development of rural communities, which involves repair and
construction of rural infrastructures," Vardan Khachatryan says.
According to the minister, the fluctuation of the exchange rate of
the dollar affects the programme. The dollar depreciation resulted in
the fall of the dram’s buying capacity. Therefore the programme has
been curtailed. We have signed an agreement with the Asian Bank:
30 million will come for roads. I hope the second project will
bring another 30. Negotiations with the Japanese Development Bank
are underway, which is also ready to fund the program of roads. So,
nothing will be left out," Vardan Khachatryan says.
