ARMENIAN MEDIA SAYS AZERBAIJANI CAPTIVE APPLIES TO PRESIDENT KOCHARIAN FOR REFUGEE STATUS

Azeri Press Agency, Azerbaijan
June 13 2007

"Armenians have disseminated controversial news on behalf of Samir
Mammadov, Azerbaijani soldier captivated by Armenian forces recently.

Now they say Samir wants to stay and Armenia. Some days ago it is said
that Samir wanted to leave for a third country. It is also said Samir
died. All these are very ridiculous. Armenians staged attack after
Armenian captive Valeri Suleimanian applied for staying in Azerbaijan.

Samir Mammadov’s uncle Vidadi Mammadov said while commenting "Arminfo"
news on Azerbaijani captive’s applying for refugee status.

The Agency disseminated information with reference to Armen Kaprielian,
head of Working Group of State Committee on prisoners of war and
missing persons. Armen Kaprielian said Samir Mammadov even requested
President Robert Kocharian. Azerbaijan representation for ICRC did
not comment on Samir Mammadov’s applying for refugee status.

Azerbaijani Defense Ministry’s press service head Eldar Safarov
told APA this is the next device circulated by Armenians. "Armenians
referred to this to distract international organizations’ attention
and mislead Armenian society".

Samir Mammadov who served in Gazakh military unit was drafted
from Barda. Samir Mammadov was taken hostage in neutral zone in
Gazakh-Icevan border on December 24.

APA reported that Karabakh resident Valeri Suleimanian of Armenian
descent was taken hostage on the front line. Valeri Suleimanian
requested to send him to a third country. Valeri Suleimanian said
all Karabakh Armenians suffer from poverty and suppressions of
military regime in Karabakh. He added that Armenians living in
occupied territories try to flee to another territory. Azerbaijan
National Security Ministry confirmed that Valeri Suleimanian was
taken hostage on the front line and applied for handing him over to
a third country.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
