SHAVARSH KOCHARIAN: OPPOSITION IS DOOMED TO FAIL IN CASE OF NOT HAVING A SINGLE CANDIDATE AT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

YEREVAN, JUNE 27, NOYAN TAPAN. In case of not having a single
candidate at the presidential elections to be held in 2008, the
opposition is doomed to fail. The chairman of the National Democratic
Party (NDP) Shavarsh Kocharian expressed this opinion at the June 27
press conference. He said that in the absence of a single candidate,
the NDP considers it senseless to support any candidate. "If Vazgen
Manukian is nominated as a single candidate, we will consider it as
most acceptable. However, the outcome is already clear in case of
nominating many candidates, and our support of V. Manukian will not
solve the problem," S. Kocharian noted.

In his words, as a result of the constitutional amendments Armenia
has become a semipresidential country, and the problem of power
has been solved after the parliamentary elections. The country’s
president not to represent the parliamentary majority will have limited
leverage, while the prime minister will be the actual first person in
power. However, the president to represent the parliamentary majority
will be be a "superpowerful president".

According to S. Kocharian, this is the reason why the current prime
minister, the RPA board’s chairman Serge Sargsian strives to become
the president.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
