European Union and the USA have amended the UN Draft Resolution on
the status of Kosovo refusing to grant independence to the region
if the negotiations with Serbia fail. The previous draft contained
a call for the parties to conduct 4-month negotiations, as well as
a plan of giving independence to Kosovo.
Belgrad rejected such solution to the status problem. Russia
threatened to veto the draft when it will be considered at the UN. US
Representative to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad said the new
draft resolution is still at the stage of final coordination. He
said the draft will be submitted to the UN Security Council after
negotiations with Russia. The new draft will also contain a call for
Serbia and Alban majority in Kosovo to conduct 4-month talks. However,
if the talks fail, the issue will be considered further. The new draft
resolution is the third attempt to enlist Russia’s support. To recall,
Russia believes the independence of Kosovo possible only subject to
Belgrad’s agreement, BBC reports.
