YEREVAN, JULY 16, NOYAN TAPAN. Paruyr Hayrikian, the Chairman of
the National Self-Determination Union, considers that a united team
of democratic forces should be formed for determining the real
competitor of Prime Minister Serge Sargsian or another political
figure. Otherwise, as he said at the July 16 press conference, the
so-called current "opposition" will not be able to do anything to
prevent reproduction of the authorities.
Commenting upon the statement of Vazgen Manukian, the Chairman of the
National Democratic Union, that the National Democratic Union, the
Union of National Democrats and the National Democratic Party should
unite and decide the problem of the common candidate, P. Hayrikian
said that "V. Manukian has considerable progress, as he did not see
anyone else as a candidate except himself before."
Hayrikian stated that he is not thinking about nominating his
own candidature yet, though he is convinced that in case of being
nominated he will receive nearly 10% votes. Nevertheless, as he said,
he is surprised at the fact that in the lifetime of "the leader of
the long-term national-liberation struggle" (Hayrikian) some figures
declare their presidential ambitions. "While it is me who has taught
them what is democracy and self-determination," P. Hayrikian said.
