CRU LEADER PROPOSES ‘PRELIMINARY’ ELECTION OF OPPOSITION CANDIDATES

YEREVAN, AUGUST 8, ARMENPRESS: Head of a minor opposition
Constitutional Right Union (CRU) party Hrant Khachatrian suggested
today that leaders of major opposition parties meet and hold what
he called ‘a preliminary election of joint presidential candidates’
for next year’s election.
Speaking to journalists he argued that this mechanism is widely
practiced in different countries in which opposition leaders fail to
agree on a single presidential candidate.
Hrant Khachatrian suggested that the preliminary election be held
either electronically or in a traditional manner saying also that the
opposition must have at least two presidential candidates, because
this would raise chances for a second round of the election.
Khachatrian said he does not have presidential ambitions and would
support the candidate selected by the opposition. He also suggested
that a fund be set up for the opposition.
