SPLIT IN JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE

"Boston Globe" newspaper informs that controversies between the
Jewsish organizations escalated after the ADL (Anti-Defamation League)
director Abraham Foxman doubted the reasonability of including the
Armenian Resolution in the US Congress agenda.

Although the date of voting for the Resolution is yet uncertain,
Turkish and a number of Jewish organizations are working to fail it. "I
don’t wabnt to become a lawmaker in others’ history," said Foxman to
"Boston Globe" and added that Congress should not be involved in
making of history.

Although numerous historians accept the fact of the Armenian Genocide,
says the newspaper, arguments about it have caused a split in the
Jewish organizations.

Some of the Jewish figures are conscious of the good neighborly
relations between Turkey and Israel and the fates of 25 thousand Jews
permanently residing in Turkey.

Armenian Studies professor at Harvard University James Russel, who
accounts himself an "American Zionist", says that Foxman’s statements
are inappropriate for a person struggling against Anti-Semitism
and racism.

"This is equal to denial of the Holocaust and is an immoral and
dishonest position," he says.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
