On August 21 the president of Iran Mahmud Ahmadinejad arrived in
Azerbaijan for a two-day official visit. During this visit important
issues regarding the Azerbaijani and Iranian cooperation are being
discussed. In this connection, Richard Giragosian, a Washington-based
Armenian analyst, said at the Friday Club interestingly the visit
of Ahmadinejad takes place almost in parallel with the visit of the
Iranian vice-president to Armenia. However, Richard Giragosian says,
the Iranian vice-president discussed sports in Armenia, while the
Iranian president is discussing military and political issues in
Azerbaijan.
Richard Giragosian says Armenia’s relation with Iran is much more
stable than the relation of Azerbaijan, besides, the Iranian and
Azerbaijani relations are complicated. However, according to him,
the recent visits to Armenia and Azerbaijan are evidence that first
Armenia underestimates its importance for Russia, and second, which is
dangerous, Armenia underestimates its importance for Iran. According
to the analyst, Iran and Azerbaijan also have energy projects and
relation, and for Tehran the relation with Baku is more important
than the relation with Yerevan.
