Previously, the ADL had described the incidents of 1915 and beyond as
"massacres and atrocities".

WASHINGTON – The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an influential American
Jewish group dedicated to countering anti-Semitism, announced Tuesday
that it would acknowledge Armenian allegations that the Ottoman Empire
committed acts of genocide against its Armenian citizens during the
First World War.

In a statement posted on the ADL’s website, the organisation’s
president Abraham Foxman said the group had come to share the view
that the incidents "were indeed tantamount to genocide".

However, Foxman said the organization maintained its opposition to
bringing the issue before the US Congress.

"We continue to firmly believe that a Congressional resolution on
such matters is a counterproductive diversion and will not foster
reconciliation between Turks and Armenians and may put at risk the
Turkish Jewish community and the important multilateral relationship
between Turkey, Israel and the United States," Foxman said.

Turkey has constantly denied Armenian claims that up to 1.5 million
Armenians lost their lives during the years of the First World War
due to actions of the Ottoman State. It does acknowledges that up to
300,000 Armenians died during the turmoil of the war in eastern Turkey,
but also points out that nearly 600,000 Turks also died in the region
during the war years, many due to attacks by Armenian troops.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
