TATUL MANASERIAN: GOVERNMENT DOES NOT TAKE ANY SERIOUS STEPS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECTOR

YEREVAN, AUGUST 30, NOYAN TAPAN. Armenia is a vulnerable country from
the viewpoint of information security. Economist Tatul Manaserian
expressed this opinion during the August 30 seminar-discussion
"The Efficiency of Modern Communication System in Armenia" held by
the Armenian Center for National and International Studies. In his
words, having declared the IT sector a priority sector of the economy,
the government is not taking "any serious steps" for IT development.

Speaking about problems related to information security in Armenia,
the economist noted that information security has a direct relation
to national security. Out of threats to information security,
T. Manaserian pointed out numerous computer viruses on the websites
of all state structures, particularly, of the National Assembly and
the government.

In his opinion, the IT sector should not be viewed as a separate branch
as it has certain influence on all sectors of the economy. "If the IT
sector is not at a satisfactory level, we cannot expect, for example,
a growth in the economy’s competitiveness," he said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
