Kocharyan’s Spokesman: In Case Negotiations Fail, Armenia Will Recog

KOCHARYAN’S SPOKESMAN: IN CASE NEGOTIATIONS FAIL, ARMENIA WILL RECOGNIZE NAGORNO KARABAKH INDEPENDENCE

If the Armenian side feels that the talks on the Nagorno Karabakh
settlement bear no results, recognition of the NKR independence
can become one of the steps to secure safety of Armenia and Nagorno
Karabakh. The position repeatedly sounded by Armenian President Robert
Kocharyan, was reminded to reporters by Kocharyan’s spokesman Viktor
Sogoonyan today, while he commented on the legislative initiative
proposed by Heritage opposition party to recognize NKR independence.

As a REGNUM correspondent informs, according to him, in reality,
Armenia recognized Nagorno Karabakh independence long time ago. "The
mere participation of the Armenian president in the inauguration
ceremony of the president of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh is the
highest level of recognition of independence," Sogomonyan said. At
the same time, he noted that at the current stage the legislative
initiative to recognize the independence was out of place. "I do
not think that defeat of the leader of the Heritage Party at one
constituency means that it is necessary to seek political benefits at
the expense of Nagorno Karabakh; it is inadmissible," the spokesman
said.

It is worth mentioning, the Heritage leader, ex-minister of foreign
affairs Raffi Hovhannissyan failed to get into the top-three at the
by-election to the parliament. He was only fourth with 1120 votes. A
candidate form the Republican Party, Khachik Manukyan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
