Here’s what you’ll see on the front page of tomorrow’s Lexington Minuteman:
* Coverage of Monday night’s Selectmen’s meeting, at which over
100 Armenian-American and Jewish residents attended. They asked the
town to sever its No Place for Hate committee’s ties with the
Anti-Defamation League.
* Special-education spending is a hot topic when talking about the
always contentious school budget. But the school district’s special
education programming received an overhaul over the summer, to rave
reviews from the School Committee. Couple that with overall cost
savings, and it looks like the town’s new special education director
is having a good few months in her new job.
* Police have been stymied in their investigation of a school
incident last spring in which a sprinkler head was pried from a
ceiling, causing $100,000 in damages. It seems uncooperative parents
are hindering the effort.
* The Department of Public Works is turning its eyes from the old
Harrington school building and looking at the White House as a
possible temporary home while its new one is built. But sometimes when
you solve one problem, others arise …
* We also attend the St. Nicholas Greek food festival and visit a
cultural day that brought the traditions of India to Cary Memorial
Library.

Selectmen delay ADL decision

More than 120 people came to tonight’s Board of Selectmen meeting to
hear the Selectmen discuss whether or not Lexington’s No Place For
Hate committee should sever its ties with the Anti-Defamation League
(ADL) – so many that the meeting had to be adjourned and reconvened in
Cary Memorial Hall to accommodate everyone.
When the meeting did reconvene, however, Chairman Jeanne Krieger made
it clear that the selectmen would only listen to what the public had
to say, and not comment themselves on the matter. Indeed, a decision
about Lexington’s No Place For Hate committee was nowhere to be found
on the selectmen’s agenda.
"We will not be making a decision tonight," she said. "Tonight we are
hear to listen."
The selectmen heard several impassioned pleas for the severance of
ties with the ADL from both Armenian-American and Jewish residents,
each followed by hearty applause from the gallery.
Jill Smilow, the chairman of Lexington’s No Place For Hate committee,
read a statement explaining that the committee was not ready to
recommend cutting ties with the ADL. Smilow is also a member of the
New England ADL board of directors.
