THE GOVERNMENT’S WORST CRIME

Lragir, Armenia
Oct 1 2007

The worst crime the government has committed it "caused the society
to decay" and made it dependent on election bribe, said the leader
of the Liberal Progressive Party of Armenia Hovanes Hovanisyan
in a debate on October 1 at the Hayeli press club. He said it is
highly important to have ideological and political struggle in the
forthcoming presidential election. Hovanes Hovanisyan thinks it is
possible only in case of the nomination of Levon Ter-Petrosyan who
can bring together the Liberal forces.

Spartak Seiranyan, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, thinks if the liberal forces
wished to come together, they would come together without Levon
Ter-Petrosyan. In other words, his presence is not a force to unite
them. Besides, Spartak Seiranyan says the government alone cannot
be blamed for the degradation of the society because the society,
the voters readily accept bribes, they even demand bribes.

Seiranyan also thinks that an election process based on ideology is
important but he is not sure it will come true, although he thinks
compared with the content of the parliamentary election, the process
will move towards ideology. Seiranyan and Hovanisyan mentioned
the ARF Dashnaktsutyun and the All-Armenian Movement as subjects
of struggle based on ideology, saying that there is considerable
space for debate on the Karabakh issue. And they had a small debate
right away. Hovanisyan said the current talks for settlement are not
favorable for us, whereas Seiranyan said the talks have never been
as favorable as they are now.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
