/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A Turkish teen will spend more than 10 years in
prison for killing a Catholic priest as the man knelt in prayer,
state-run media reported Thursday.

The 16-year-old, identified only as O.A., had pleaded guilty to
shooting the Rev. Andrea Santoro at a church in the Black Sea port
city of Trabzon in February 2006.

The killing occurred at a time of widespread anger in the Islamic
world over the publication in European newspapers of caricatures of
the Prophet Muhammad.

The teen was sentenced to more than 18 years in prison – a decision
upheld Thursday.

However, legal experts said he will not serve the entire sentence
and is expected to be released after about 10 years, Associated
Press reports.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
