Armenians express gratitude to Americans for Congress step on
genocide

YEREVAN, Armenia: Armenian lawmakers stood to applaud, and their
president called on the U.S. to go even further than the step the
U.S. Congress has made toward labeling the WWI-era deaths of
Armenians genocide.
But some in the country’s capital expressed fears Armenians could
bear the brunt of a harsh Turkish reaction.
"Historical justice is restored," said the headline in Friday’s
pro-government newspaper Respublika Armenia.
In parliament, opposition deputies joined their pro-government
colleagues Thursday in a prolonged standing ovation at the
announcement of a U.S. House committee’s passage of the nonbinding
resolution the day before.
"We express our gratitude to our colleagues in Congress who
demonstrated great moral qualities and, not giving into different
pressures, voted for the resolution," said Tigran Torosian, chairman
of the National Assembly.
