"Turkey has announced that it is recalling its ambassador to the USA,
that it is considering new moves concerning Iraq, and that it is
closing Incerlik airbase, now being used by the Americans," Turkey
expert Artak Shagaryan, now in America, told a Panorama.am journalist
during an interview. He reminded that Turkey issued similar threats
to France, but that trade between the countries didn’t suffer, nor
did their military cooperation, and not only that, France is now
considering constructing a new atomic power station in Turkey.
"As much as Turkey shows its teeth, Ankara cannot escape from real
politics. America is a real power, and sometimes one has to take this
into consideration and swallow things, especially in this case since
President Bush and his administration apparently did their best to
put a stop to the passage of the resolution," Shagaryan said.
"The anti-American actions Turkey is proposing is only a game,
something to show its internal audience, that it is being strict
with Washington, and that they aren’t letting someone step all over
them. This is all taking into consideration the growing movement in
Turkey towards nationalism and chauvinism," Shagaryan said, adding
that this step by American was needed most by Turkish chauvinists,
who are using this in their speeches and propaganda.
