OSKANYAN ADDRESSED CONGRESS OF ARMENIANS OF EUROPE

On October 15 Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan took part in the second
congress of the European Armenians. The Catholicos of the Great House
of Cilicia Aram I, the deputy president of the European Commission
Franco Fratini, the President of the European Armenian Federation
for Justice and Democracy (ANC Europe) Hilda Tchoboian addressed the
opening session, the ministry of foreign affairs reported.
Hay Dat delegates of about 30 countries, including the EU, Switzerland,
Norway, Russia and the Near East are participating in the two-day
conference at the house of the European Parliament.
Minister Oskanyan addressed the first session of the congress. He
pointed to the relevance of the decision of the European Parliament
on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in 1987 and compared with
the U.S. House debates on the resolution recognizing the genocide. He
said the European Parliament made a decision 20 years ago which is
as relevant as today and enabled raising the Armenian issue in the
international European context.
Former members of the European Parliament, as well as the head of the
Armenian representation to the CoE Christian Ter-Stepanyan, addressed
the congress dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the recognition
by the European Parliament, the film "Screamers" by Karla Karapetyan
was shown.
Today the EU’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter
Semneby, the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair Bernard Fassier and the ICG
Europe program director Sabine Freizer will address the session.
