One could hardly find sugar in Yerevan shops. All shelves are empty,
and shop-assistants are unaware of reasons. We encountered the opposite
scene at "Yerevan City" supermarket on Tigran Mets Street.
A few sacks of sugar were lying in the corner of the shop with a
label 660 drams. Each sack contained three kilos of sugar. There
wasn’t any sugar buyer at the shop. We found a long line in front of
the supermarket. People elbowed way through the crowd to buy sugar
at 220 drams.
4-5 salesmen quickly weighed and handed sugar.
"They say sugar is cheaper here," they said.
One of the buyers suddenly remembered that sugar price had gone up
in the morning. "People are at a loss as sugar price has gone up all
of a sudden. You never know what may happen tomorrow," he said
Some shops sold sugar at 350-400 drams per a kilo.
When we tried to take a photo of the queue, the security guards
forbade and threatened us. We were able to take photos from the
opposite pavement.
To note, "Yerevan City" supermarkets belong to NA deputy Samvel
Alexanian.
