HRAYR KARAPETIAN: "TIMES WHEN SHIFT OF POWER WAS POSSIBLE AS RESULT OF RALLIES PASSED"

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 26, NOYAN TAPAN. The times, when shift of power was
possible as a result of mass meetings, have passed. This opinion was
expressed by Hrayr Karapetian, the Chairman of the ARF Dashnaktsutiun
faction of the RA National Assembly, during the October 26 press
briefing.

"Sometimes it seems that if many people gather at a mass meeting, there
will be a shift of power on the following day. In 1992 more than 200
thousand people gathered in Baghramian street, however, the authorities
did not resign," the Chairman of the faction mentioned. According to
him, the ARF Dashnaktsutiun as well was opposition and was led into
the same error.

In the words of Hrayr Karapetian, people, who do not like anybody,
and not those, who like Levon Ter-Petrosian, will take part in the mass
meeting to be held in Freedom Square on the same day. According to him,
representatives of certain strata of the population are disstisfied
with the current authorities and that dissatisfaction often has
objective reasons. However, in the conviction of Hrayr Karapetian,
many of them will never vote for the candidate of the political force
representing the previous authorities.

In response to the question concerning the incident, which took place
between the participants of the procession held on October 23 and the
police, Hrayr Karapetian mentioned that irrespective of the fact that
the Dashnaktsutiun suffered because of the political force, which
took part in that incident, some time ago, it has no intention to
rejoice at the misfortunes of others. "We think that such phenomena
are condemnable irrespective of the fact of who is the instigator,"
he mentioned. According to Hrayr Karapetian, the ARF Dashnaktsutiun
equally condemns both those, who exsert violation upon free speech,
as well as those, who try to instigate these or those activities
under the mask of free speech.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
