The government has started drafting the budget bill of 2008 which
has foreseen a considerable rise of pensions and benefits. People
are longing for this rise to be able to keep up with the prices which
are growing day by day.

One of the presidential pledges was to raise pensions and benefits
from January 1, 2008. In today’s meeting the government decided to
raise pensions and benefits.

>From January 1, 2008 the monthly benefit of disabled children under 18
will be 8500 drams, children of single mothers 5000 drams, parentless
children 20 thousand drams, children who have lost one of the parents
10 thousand drams, children of divorced parents 5000 drams.

The children of servicemen will get 7500 drams, children of people
with 1 degree disability will get 9000 dram, children of people with
2 degree disability will get 5500 drams. Families having many children
will also get 5500 drams.

>From New Year single months will get a monthly benefit of 5000 drams,
the guardians of children under 1 year will get 4500 drams, children
will get a monthly 6000 drams till the age of 1.

Good news for unemployed mothers. The one-time aid on the birth of
a child will grow from 35 thousand to 70 thousand drams, and both
working mothers and unemployed mothers will get the monthly benefit
of 4500 drams.

The benefit to parentless children will grow from 17 to 27.2 thousand
drams.

By another decision of the government, the basic pension will grow
from 4250 drams to 6800 drams, the payment for each year of service
will grow from 230 to 395 drams. On the whole, the average monthly
pension will rise by 60 percent. Amendments have been made to the
government decision on pensions of servicemen and their families.

Earlier a similar reform was carried out in Armenia.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
