About 90 percent of illegal drugs is brought from Turkey and Iran,
News Armenia reported, referring to Nazareth Mnatsakanyan, head of
the police department for illegal drugs trafficking, who held a news
conference on November 6. According to Mnatsakanyan, 90 percent of
opium and heroin is trafficked from Turkey and Iran, 10 percent is
brought from Middle Asia and Russia.

Nazareth Mnatsakanyan says Armenia is not considered as a source of
drugs, and the local market is too small. Armenia is behind of other
CIS countries by the use of drugs. Every 6000th citizen uses drugs
in Armenia.

"Armenia is a secondary route since transport communication
between Armenia and the neighboring countries is limited," Nazareth
Mnatsakanyan says. According to him, the most widespread illegal drug
is marijuana which grows all over the country.

In January-September 2007 the police have detected 702 cases of
trafficking drugs. 35 kg of narcotic and psychedelic drugs was
confiscated. 87 tons of cannabis and 133 kg of poppy was destroyed.
