Democratic Liberal Union of Armenia convened a session of the
political council yesterday to celebrate the 6th anniversary of
the party’s establishment and to clarify their attitudes during the
forthcoming presidential elections. After the session the political
council published its political statement on this occasion.

At the end of the political council Chair of Democratic Liberal Union
of Armenia Seyran Avagyan answered the questions of the correspondent
of "Hayots Ashkharh" daily.

"Mr. Avagyan why didn’t you point out the name of your preferable
candidate and left it for the 5th congress to take place in December?"

"Democratic Liberal Union of Armenia has been in the political
domain for already six years. We usually make decisions regarding
the most important political issues and formulate our attitude during
the congress.

Our attitude towards this or that candidate is not conditioned by
his personality. We attach importance to the lucid and principled
attitudes of the country’s third president. Someone who can guarantee
security and military protection for Armenia and NKR, who can guarantee
supremacy of law in the country and observance of public order and
finally the one who can pursue the country’s economic progress and
the development policy. In our view Armenia’s President and all
the candidates to Presidency must first of all be patriotic, honest
strong-minded and daring.

There is one in the candidates for presidency that doesn’t comply with
the before mentioned principles and can’t become Armenia’s President –
it is Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

The correctness inside the party demands that the congress comes to a
decision on the presidential candidate representing Democratic Liberal
Union of Armenia. We are not the party of surprises; we usually make
weighty decisions and will always do. The fact that we separate the
candidate representing Armenian Pan National Movement from all the
other candidates is absolutely not conditioned by the present-day
political developments. Simply this is our political biography and
the continuation of the path that we have already passed.

Democratic Liberal Union of Armenia has a great experience to fight
against the ruining attitude of that political unit and we have
always had a huge amount of supporters. They have the same attitude
towards Armenian Pan National Movement and their statement was aimed
at establishing solidarity with us."

"Why do you state that we mustn’t entrust the country’s leadership
to Levon Ter-Petrosyan?"

"Democratic Liberal Union of Armenia reckons political chances in
the right way, it is a party of the future and is able to give right
evaluation to the political reality. When we established Armenian Pan
National Movement it was accepted by the whole nation and people used
to link the progress of the country with that political power. But in
1991 we had to set up National Democratic Union, in order to protect
the rights of the citizens and avoid encroachment upon their honor and
dignity. Thus we became a radical opposition to the acting political
administration. In a very short period of time people became sure that
the party that enjoyed their trust is wasting the pan-national capital
and they started to fight against Armenian Pan National Movement. 1996
was the culmination.

At present we can even consider it natural that some people became
interested in Armenian Pan National Movement that resigned 10 years
back.

But many people still remember the developments of those years and
the reasons that caused them. The infringement upon their rights and
dignity and these people are ready to fight for their future.

We don’t object to Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s nomination and we don’t
prepare any political initiative to prevent him from becoming a
candidate it is his constitutional right. But we also have our rights
and we must do our best so that this evil won’t threaten the country
any more.

Nothing has been forgotten and today we still continue our political
campaign.
