SARKISIAN RESPONDS TO MPs
[08:05 pm] 05 December, 2007

Today Armenia’s Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian readily answered MPs’
questions in the National Assembly.

OYP member Mher Shahgeldian noted that compared with other countries
of the region demography is in a terrible plight in Armenia. The
country is `getting older.’

The Armenian premier was especially well-disposed to Heritage party
female-deputies and `delighted’ them with his ready-made answers.

Nevertheless, Serzh Sarkissian got nerves before replying to Heritage
member Zaruhi Postanjian’s question regarding political prisoners
Zhirair Sefilian, Vardan Malkhassian and Armen Babajanian.

`Does a deputy have a right to raise questions at each four-day
sitting?’ Serzh Sarkissian wondered. After getting a positive answer,
he answered the question.

Larissa Alaverdian referred to refugee problems. She remarked that
bureaucratism is the main foe of the authorities. She wants to restore
public confidence towards the authorities.

Serzh Sarkissian thanked Ms Alaverdian for her concern. He assured her
that he would continue cooperation to tackle refugee problems.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
