Human Rights As Universal Development Agents Of The Modern Society

HUMAN RIGHTS AS UNIVERSAL DEVELOPMENT AGENTS OF THE MODERN SOCIETY

Today, on the Human Rights day, the students who participated in the
Human Rights School special course titled "Human Rights as Universal
Development Agents of the Modern Society" received certificates
on the occasion of the completion of this course. The course was
organized by UN Department of Public Information in collaboration
with the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy at V. Brusov
Yerevan State Linguistic University.

UNDPI Representative Mr. Valeri Tkatchouk as lead agency, reiterated
about the goals and objectives of this UN initiative and stressed
the role of Human Rights in the modern society. He also mentioned
that this is a special day as the World campaign devoted to the 60th
anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is officially
launched today. "Throughout the next year up to10 December 2008 people
everywhere around the world will mark this anniversary with special
commemorative events and activities", he concluded.

Special guests of this ceremony were the President of the Brusov
Yerevan State Linguistic University Mr. Suren Zolyan, Head of
the Department of International Organizations of MFA Ms. Dziunik
Aghajanyan, UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy Mr. Valeri
Poghosyan.

The themes for the course were related to various aspects of Human
Rights and linked to the eight Millennium Development Goals – Education
and Human Rights; Children’s Rights and MDGs; Women’s Human Rights:
Gender Equality and MDG progress, Gender and Politics; Refugee and
Asylum Seekers’ Rights; Economic and Social Rights: MDGs and Poverty
Reduction, PRSP; Political and Civil Rights; Sustainable development,
environmental rights and MDGs; Stigma and discrimination towards people
living with HIV/AIDS, rights of HIV positive people. The students
participated also in special presentations on The Role of Human Rights
in the Armenian Society and Armenia’s representation in Human rights
councils, committees, sub-committees of International Organizations,
also UN Human Rights documents and their role in Armenia.

>From 22 October till 10 December 2007 about 40 students from various
universities took part in the lectures series delivered by professional
staff of UN DPI, UNICEF, UNHCR, World Bank and UNAIDS and leading
specialists of partner NGOs – Armenian Constitutional Right Protective
Center, Armenian Association of Women with University Education,
Association for Sustainable Human Development and Helsinki Committee
of Armenia.
