ANTILIAS, DECEMBER 11, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. Fouad Siniora,
the Prime Minister of Lebanon, had a telephone conversation with
Aram I, the Catholicos of the Great Cilician House, on December
10. According to the information provided from the Patriarchate
of Antilias, the Prime Minister introduced the political situation
governing in Lebanon, concentrating especially on the presidential
elections. He stated that there is an agreement on the presidential
candidate, however, there are certain difficulties in the direction of
the process of the constitutional amendments. The main divergence of
opinion is that Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon,
wants that amendment to be made through the parliament and he, the
Prime Minister, and the government led by him regard that approach
as anti-constitutional.

After listening the concerns and viewpoints of the Prime Minister,
His Holiness Patriarch expressed happiness that the political opposite
forces have managed to reach an agreement with regard to the person of
the new president. His Holiness stressed the imperative necessity for
bringing the country out of the current uncertainty, saying that other
difficulties for reaching that goal should be considered as secondary.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
