YEREVAN, DECEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS: A presidential candidate claimed
today that ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosian’s victory in the February
19 presidential election would prove a real "disaster, a tragedy
for Armenia."
Artashes Geghamian, nominated by his National Unity party to contest
the election, accused today the former president and his supporters
of employing blackmail and aiming to stir up civil clashes.
Geghamian went as far as to accuse the Armenian National Movement
(ANM) and the former presidnet of seeking to instigate a civil war,
because ‘the ANM and its satellites realize that they have no chances
to receive even 5-6 percent of votes in the election and that is why
they are trying to stir up a civil war to prepare soil for intervention
of international organizations."
Geghamian said he is sure that everyone who scrutinizes the former
president’s public speech would arrive to this same conclusion. He
urged Armenians to ignore rallies which Ter-Petrosian and his
supporters stage, saying that will be a way to thwart Ter-Petrosian’s
plans.
Artashes Geghamian said when Ter-Petrosian and he had met earlier
this year they agreed to avoid smearing one another, but he accused
the former president of breaking the agreement first.
Geghamian said he has learned that Ter-Petrosian and his allies
would try to instigate disorders at about 400-500 polling stations
on the voting day. He further claimed that in January foreign media
is likely to start spreading ‘compromising’ materials against both
the authorities in Yerevan and other opposition groups.
Before to wrap up Geghamian said he is sure that the February 19
ballot would be much more fair than the 1996 presidential election,
that was questioned by Ter-Petrosian’s rival, Vazgen Manukian.
Geghamian National Unity, touted as a major opposition political party,
failed to win a single seat in the May 12 parliamentary elections.
