ARMENIA’S THEATRICAL SPHERE IS A DULL AREA, AZAT GASPARIAN SAYS

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 17, NOYAN TAPAN. Theater is on the verge of
disappointment in Armenia: high-class performances are not in demand
today. Actor Azat Gasparian and actress Lala Mnatsakanian characterized
the state of modern Armenian theatrical art this way at the December
17 press conference.

According to A. Gasparian, "Armenia’s theatrical sphere is a dull
area."

According to him, the state officials do not care for the theater,
they do not go to the theater. In A. Gasparian’s words, many problems
existing in this sphere would be regulated by the law On Theater,
which the parliament failed to adopt this year, either.

According to L. Mnatsakanian, today’s spectators are not interested in
theater at all and only pay attention to shows. Considering it natural
that show business develops in Armenia, as in the whole world, the
actress at the same time said that in difference to other countries,
theater suffers in Armenia parallel with these processes.

L. Mnatsakanian said that though she has repeatedly declined proposals
to be shot in serials, nowadays for many actors, it is difficult to
resist the temptation and to decline profitable proposals.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
